Ken Field Alto Saxophone Project http://kenfield.org Originally formed as a live performance vehicle for the music of Ken Field, the group now has expanded its repertoire to include striking material by saxophonist/composer Neil Leonard. Ken Field's music for three alto saxophones, bass, and drums has been compared to everything from Sun Ra to chant, trance, and saxophone quartets. Combined with his interest in New Orleans funk and street beat rhythms, The Alto Saxophone Project creates "Twentieth Century head music with a swinging beat"! Featured in the ensemble with Field are the acclaimed alto saxophonists Matt Steckler (who also leads the award-winning ensemble Dead Cat Bounce) and Neil Leonard (a member of the faculty at Berklee College of Music, with international performance credits including Don Byron and David Bryant), drummer Eric Paull (who has toured and recorded extensively with the alternative pop group Clem Snide and with international favorite DJ Logic), and acoustic bassist Derek VanBeever (who has played with Sam Rivers and currently is a member of the Boston-based Gamelan Galak Tika). The Alto Saxophone Project features Field's original music for layered saxophones, including pieces originally written for Sesame Street and Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, as well as new music composed specially for this group by Neil Leonard.
